We received the Fisher Price Kid Tough Walkie Talkies for review.

Just push to talk, release to listen! Includes two handheld units—one for you, and one for a friend! Requires two 9V batteries.

Hunter was really excited to receive these walkie talkies…but not so pleased that I told him he had to share them with Ethan.  These walkie talkies are pretty heavy duty for being a kids item.  They are durable and can handle being dropped, as kids tend to do with everything.  We had some 9V batteries in a drawer that hadn’t ever been used so we popped them in and let the boys go to work.

Initially, the result was a lot of static and echoing.  If they stood too close to each other it was static-y.  If they were too far apart it was static-y and echo-y.  We couldn’t seem to win.  I even contacted the sponsor to see what I might be able to do as far as getting them to work.  And they suggested new batteries.  Duh…why didn’t I think of that?

So new batteries were purchased and installed and though the end result wasn’t stellar (they’re made for play, not jaunts in the wilderness with a tour guide) it was a vast improvement from when we first received them.  Suggestions for newer models…maybe make them use standard sized batteries rather than 9V.  We have tons of rechargeable batteries in our house but 9V are rarely used (hence having them in a drawer, I honestly don’t know how old they were).
